| Madison County - Canton, incorporated 1836.
No major civil war battles here, but because it was the terminus of two
Mississippi railroads: the "Mississippi Central Railroad," and
the "New Orleans, Great Northern and Jackson Railroad," there
were a lot of wounded transported here, and the cemetary has 350 war dead
in it. 8/12/2004 Back to the list of counties Canton was intermittently the adult home of slide guitarist and blues singer Elmore James, who was born and grew up 20-some miles north in Richland and nearby plantation communities. Modern slide guitarist Sonny Landreth was born in Canton but moved to Louisiana as a child. The film A Time to Kill, based on a novel by John Grisham, was filmed in Canton. |
