Madison County - Canton, incorporated 1836. No major civil war battles here, but because it was the terminus of two Mississippi railroads: the "Mississippi Central Railroad," and the "New Orleans, Great Northern and Jackson Railroad," there were a lot of wounded transported here, and the cemetary has 350 war dead in it.

Canton was intermittently the adult home of slide guitarist and blues singer Elmore James, who was born and grew up 20-some miles north in Richland and nearby plantation communities. Modern slide guitarist Sonny Landreth was born in Canton but moved to Louisiana as a child.

The film A Time to Kill, based on a novel by John Grisham, was filmed in Canton.
